Dahlias Year-Round: a workshop series

Hello, dahlia enthusiasts!  Join Dooryard Dahlias and our collaborators at Merryspring Nature Center for this 4-part workshop series.  Over 4 sessions, participants will learn how to care for dahlias throughout the year, from spring planting to winter tuber storage and everything in between.  Topics will include:

  • Winter: waking up your tubers; rooting dahlia shoots; starting dahlias from seed

    • An overview of dahlias followed by a workshop on rooting shoots (a great way to increase your plant stock!).  Participants will take home their own rooted cutting.

  • Spring: planting; staking; pinching; scouting and early season plant care

    • In addition to the basics of planting and staking, learn how to pinch your young dahlia plants to get more blooms and how to scout for pests.

  • Summer: harvesting and handling dahlia blooms; deadheading; late season plant care

    • Learn when & how to harvest blooms to maximize vase life, encourage longer stems, and keep your plants blooming.  Exclusive opportunity to pick your own bouquet at the Dooryard Dahlia field!

  • Fall: lifting and dividing dahlia tubers; storing tubers over winter; seed saving

    • Demystify tuber dividing and learn how to store your tubers for next year. Learn how to save seed so you can grow your own unique dahlias.
